Pawpad announces its next batch of our pet grooming course. We start on 21st November 2022. This is a four week course. Classes are held Monday to Friday. 11am to 4 pm.

The course is facilitated by Leena Munikempanna who runs Pawpad. She is a certified pet groomer, an internationally certified master cat groomer, an internationally certified canine esthetician and internationally certified in pet emergency care.

What does it mean to be certified as a Canine Esthetician?

The certificate course addresses the requisite skills in laying a strong foundation in understanding canine skin and haircoat. Leena is now equipped with the knowledge and skills required to address canine skin and coat  issues. The course has also enabled Leena to test Pawpad pet grooming services by international industry standards.

Being certified means Leena is better able to engage with your vet. We will collaboratively work with your dog, you, your vet and other team members to look more holistically as to how we can contribute towards the health of your dog’s skin and coat. This will be a much slower process involving multiple sessions. The improved health of your dog’s skin and coat is the end goal.

The certificate course in becoming a canine esthetician is a PGC (Professional Grooming Credentials) approved course. India Grooming Show is a competition for dog groomers. This will be held on Sunday 28th August 2022 at Awfis, Residency Road, Bangalore. Timings are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Judges for the competition include Janhavi Dhuldhoya, Shweta Verma, Andrea Khurana, Ashita Matthew.

Leena will be delivering a seminar – An Introduction to Cat Grooming at the event.

This is Prada, a miniature schnauzer I worked on at the recent workshop. Prada is an adorable, adorable 11 month old who came all the way from Kerala. She did not have the wiry coat required for a schnauzer instead her coat was soft. If we had continued to clipper her coat it would remain soft. If we do what is required i.e handstrip with patience what we’ll eventually get is the wiry coat that makes this breed unique and special. Moreover her coat
maintenance then becomes minimal. Doing this little bundle’s eyebrows was super thrilling! Thank you to Jisto Shaji so much for trusting me with her and thank you Casa Gold Pet Care Academy for enriching my knowledge about these breeds.

Before Becoming A Pet Groomer

By the time I turned 18 our house was always filled with rescued puppies or kittens. The ones who I couldn’t house would be found homes. Sometimes it wasn’t all that perfect. Because rescuing animals is also finding them at their most vulnerable. It also shows you the cruelty that human beings are capable of. Turning to pet grooming after such a life experience brought me to a completely different world.

What A Pet Groomer’s Life is Like

What I encounter here in my pet grooming business is a completely different picture. It is the love that human beings are capable of. The love and affection that animals are capable of giving, those they meet for the first time, still surprises me. It is deeply humbling to see the trust with which they let me near them, let me work on their bodies. Those one to two hours we spend together alone, only engaging with each other, is an extremely intense experience. Most times it is smooth and easy. But again, there are times though when it is all about give and take. It is about respecting each other’s boundaries. About giving time. Being patient.

Patience and Trust on My Grooming Table

Patience has been the single most important lesson I have learnt (more like have been taught!) as a pet groomer. Even Bangalore traffic couldn’t teach me that! This hasn’t come easy. It has taken years of work. Years of working with animals with such a variety of temperaments. At the core of it is the fact that the dog or cat who sits on my grooming table is able to trust me. Trust me to not harm them. When that happens, at each and every groom, it is one of the most beautiful things that life offers.

Every day is different. Every cat or dog is different. Pet parents are different too! Just like the excitement of meeting a stranger for the first time. Like a blind date! We live in a city like Bangalore where travelling anywhere is a nightmare. To have all these wonderful new people come in every single day. Wonderful new dogs. New cats. What more could one ask for?
