When’s the perfect age to start kitten grooming? This is one of the most frequent questions I am asked. At Pawpad we recommend starting early. Your little furball is ready to dive into a professional grooming session anywhere between 4 to 6 months of age. Here’s why.
Typically a kitten starts to groom themselves starting at 2 weeks of age. Since grooming requires certain motor skills – a good grasp of self grooming occurs by about the age of 6 weeks. At about 2 months old a kitten is at the stage of development wherein they’re learning to explore their environments. This is also the age wherein they start to interact with other animals and humans. A kitten starts teething at about 3 weeks and will sport a proud pair of 30 adult teeth by the time they are 3 months.
So at between 4 months to 6 months they have learned to socialize, have adult teeth, learn how to navigate their environments and have had some experience of being handled. Hence this would be the ideal time to bring them in for a professional grooming service. On the other hand this could also be the time that you as a pet parent can start to explore grooming your kitten at home.
Kitten Grooming: Tips
Environment:
Ensure that the environment is not noisy. Kittens are easily startled. This is because cats have a heightened sense of hearing. Any loud noises will make your kitten jumpy and anxious.
Kitten Grooming Tools:
It’s important to use kitten safe equipment such as cat safe toothpastes, kitten friendly toothbrushes, warm water, towels for drying etc. Introduce your kitten to grooming tools before using them. Kittens then get accustomed to the tools.
Bathing A Kitten:
A kitten’s coat is softer and shorter than an adult cat’s. They lose their baby fur between 6 months to 12 months of age and then move into seasonal shedding. Bathing helps clean up the debris collected on the skin and the coat. It is recommended that a kitten is slowly introduced to the concept of bathing. One way is to start off bathing with a wet sponge. Make sure that the water is not too cold nor too hot. Use towels to dry them off. Avoid a hairdryer in the first few grooming sessions as this might make a kitten anxious. Use a cat safe shampoo on the body of the kitten.
Oral Hygiene for Kittens:
It is recommended that brushing a kitten’s teeth starts after they have developed their full set of adult teeth. This is usually by 3 months of age. Use a cat safe toothpaste and a kitten friendly toothbrush that is soft. It is really important to pay attention to oral hygiene since cats are very prone to dental issues due to the build up of plaque. Getting a kitten started on teeth brushing ensures that they get comfortable with the process early on.
Kitten Ear Cleaning:
Cats tend to pick up a lot of dirt in their ears. Starting off ear cleaning early on as something you assist your kitten with gets them comfortable with having their ears cleaned.
Trimming A Kitten’s Nails:
It is highly recommended that cats have their nails trimmed regularly. It goes without saying that getting them used to this as kittens will go a long way in reducing anxiety around it. Ensure that you take your time with this. Get the kitten comfortable with having your hands on its paws before you get down to trimming the nails. Pressing on the under side of the pad will expose the nail which can then be trimmed. Ensure that you only trim off bits of nail and avoid the quick which might then cause bleeding and worse the kitten will get anxiety attached to the process.
Kitten Grooming: Summing Up
Grooming a kitten is much like grooming an older cat. It requires a lot of patience and time. It’s important to keep the grooming sessions short. More importantly since these sessions will lay the foundation of how a cat treats grooming sessions it is important to not make a kitten anxious. Stop if the kitten feels uncomfortable. There will always be time to try again. You can also try giving treats to make it easier.
It’s important to remember that a grooming session offers space to connect. Whether it be the pet parent with the kitten or a groomer with the kitten. This is the beginning of life long journey. Enjoy it!
